In 1989 Ian Kiernan started doing Clean Up Australia Day.
Clean up Australia is a non profit organisation and clean up Australia day is held on the first Sunday of March.
During clean ups, people find many things like bottles, plastic bags, wallets, shopping trolleys and old fridges in their local creeks.
Australia is among the world's highest producers of waste. 80 millions plastic bags are dumped each year.
There are 2 ways you and your family can be part of Clean Up Australia Day.You can visit a designated site or choose a local spot for example a park or bushland. You can get information from the website about existing clean up sites in your area or call 1800 282 329. You need to wear a hat, sunscreen, protective gloves and old clothes as you probably will get dirty.
